Abstract
This chapter provides a qualitative description and review of the research evidence for psychosocial treatment and prevention programs targeted at middle to late adolescents (ages 13‐21 years) diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder (CD). Modalities included in this review are individual interventions, parent training, family interventions, group interventions, and multi‐component interventions. The chapter also briefly reviews several group‐based treatment programs that are considered promising, that is, that have shown moderate to strong evidence of their effectiveness with early adolescents but have yet to demonstrate effectiveness with older adolescents. Individual work with adolescents involves establishing a therapeutic alliance, defining meaningful therapeutic goals for youth, generating hope, improving problem‐solving and social competence skills, and preparing teens to discuss important issues with their parents. Interventions with parents aim to enhance emotional connection to teens and improve parenting skills (e.g., limit setting and monitoring).
