Abstract
This chapter explores the critical roles and responsibilities of public health institutions and systems relevant to plastic and reconstructive surgery. Herein, the distinctions between public health, which targets population-based services, and medical care, which focuses on patients, are emphasized, along with the integration of both to improve overall healthcare delivery. Topics such as the United States Food and Drug Administration's regulation of medical devices and cosmetics used in plastic surgery, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reimbursement policies for reconstructive versus cosmetic procedures, and state health departments' oversight of plastic and reconstructive surgery practices are covered. Overall, the integration of public health systems within the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery will be explored.
