Abstract

Awareness Experimental Design Focus Group Human Interviews Psychology: Professional & Research Qualitative Methods Self-Perception Social Sciences Theories
Gathering data through interviews and focus groups is an increasingly recognized and valued skill for behavioral, health, and social science researchers. It is common knowledge that research generally stems from the researcher's own life experience, observations, and thoughts. Therefore, the power of interviews and focus groups lies in their potential to unlock keys to our lived experiences by unearthing voices of people, some of whom may live in marginalized communities. This chapter provides an overview of the importance of interviews and focus groups, as well as qualitative research designs, skills, and methods. It describes how qualitative research designs emerged from social theories (e.g., feminism, social interactionism, critical theory) and paradigms of social science (positivism, interpretivism). The chapter explains the skill of developing reflexivity, or self-awareness, of the interview and focus group process and how it will help the researchers situate their own identity in the context of the research.
