Abstract
The communication and media industries are in the midst of innovative change that promises great significance for the economic landscape surrounding the entire sports enterprise. This chapter presents a cursory review of the history leading up to current state of communications technology as it applies to the sports industry. It reviews regulatory issues as they apply to the sport media and suggests the imminent regulatory challenges of the developing technology. The chapter discusses the causes and effects of the new revenue streams on the sports product, the possible transformations of the games and competitions themselves. It explores the regulatory and judicial choices needed to bring about and maintain an equitable environment for sports consumers and the producers and conduits of sports media. Technology has developed to facilitate live broadcasts of sporting events over the worldwide web. The most dramatic effect of the new media on sports business is a substantial surge in the broadcast values of live sports programming.
