Abstract
Rectal cancers account for approximately 12% of all colorectal cancers diagnosed in the United States. While their histology closely mimics that of colon cancers, their anatomical location below the peritoneal reflection allows them to easily infiltrate the surrounding soft tissues of the pelvis. The close proximity to the anal sphincter and genitourinary structures makes surgical excision more complex with the potential to aff ect quality of life at early stages of the disease. For these reasons, combined modality therapy plays a vital role in both the neoadjuvant and adjuvant settings.
