Redeeming the city: Los Angeles in the social imagination of an urban social ministry
Religion in Los Angeles
2021
Abstract
Several recent reports suggest that the conservative Christian world is showing signs of change, especially among its younger members. Millennial evangelicals and Pentecostals appear to have a somewhat different perspective than their elders on a variety of issues including the environment, poverty, and other social justice issues. This chapter examines how the Los Angeles Dream Center, a neo-Pentecostal megachurch and its 36-year-old Pastor, Matthew Barnett, has utilized its focus on social ministry and its location in Los Angeles to draw evangelical and Pentecostal Millennials who are seeking both religious experience and the opportunity to serve the poor and oppressed. The authors argue that the amalgam of place, celebrity, service, and a connection to the historic Angelus Temple – built by Aimee Semple McPherson – has attracted people from as near as suburban Los Angeles, to as far away as Europe, Australia, and South Africa.
