Abstract
Chapter abstract: Nursing is a highly diverse and complex profession, with multiple academic levels to enter the profession including an Associate Degree, a Baccalaureate Degree, an accelerated Baccalaureate, or a Master’s entry, all of which prepare the student to sit for the national nursing certification exam and receive a registered nurses (RN) license. After earning the RN license, there are literally hundreds of ways for nurses to contribute to human or population or global health; they can earn specialty certificates, obtain advanced clinical or research degrees or use their nursing perspective to inform and shape other professions such as law, politics and business. This chapter explores issues unique to nurses who have elected to return to graduate school to obtain a graduate degree as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to expand their clinical knowledge and expertise.
