Relevance, Inclusion, and Interaction in Museums from Peale’s Perspective: Not Yet Enough
A New Role for Museum Educators: Purpose, Approach, and Mindset, pp 13-22
01 Jan 2023
Abstract
This chapter is an exploration of Charles Willson Peale, founder of the first natural history museum in the United States and his orientation to exhibitions and interpretation. The chapter examines the tenets of Peale’s museum, and the activities he constructed to attract and educate learners in a social setting; this chapter also explores the historic roots of interpretation, as well as its current definition. With examples of current museum experiences, exhibitions, and programs that take a deeper dive into engagement and interpretation, this chapter expands Peale’s original vision of stimulating curiosity and inviting inquiry. Ending with a few insights from innovative, school-based research, readers are challenged to transform experiences, enliven sites, and ensure deeper understanding while powerfully and intentionally engaging curiosity.
