Responsible Brain-System Integration

Abstract
The brain-technology frontier is enabled by neuroergonomists and allied professionals who have joined forces with neuroscientists, neuroengineers, signal and systems engineers to design, develop and deploy brain-in-the-loop automation or autonomous systems. We may refer to such systems as ‘brain systems.’ The neurodata that flow in such systems are unlike any other behavioral or physiological information since neurosignals acquired from the brain reveal the inner workings of our mind. This paper calls for a new age ‘neuroergonomics philosophy’ that informs rethinking of the ‘neuroergonomic code-of-conduct’ that unequivocally acknowledges our commitment to moral responsibilities, individual and social accountability while also certifying our competence in safeguarding neurodata, and by implication, neurorights. Proactive engagement in interdisciplinary professional and civil discourse and intercultural activities will pave the way to farsighted and strategic thinking in neuroergonomics. Partnerships with scholars and students of human nature as well as social, political and legal scientists in advocacy, in development of standards, policies and legal frameworks are encouraged.
