Book chapter
Risk Communication
International Perspectives on Violence Risk Assessment
16 Jul 2016
Abstract
Risk communication is important in the larger process of risk appraisal and decision making for outcomes such as violence and other criminal offending. This chapter addresses the communication of risk by (a) providing a conceptual description of risk communication and its relationship to risk assessment, (b) reviewing the evidence on the normative practice of risk communication, and (c) describing the impact of different approaches to risk communication. Findings from the International Risk Survey are incorporated into the discussion of the larger body of research and scholarship in this area, which is largely drawn from North America. The chapter concludes with recommendations for research and practice, particularly those that would advance the understanding of risk communication from an international perspective.
