In this chapter, the existing literature on speech, language, and social development in children with sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs) is reviewed. Given the scarcity of studies of young children with SCAs, the topic of this volume, studies of children of all ages as well as some studies of adults are summarized in order to begin to describe the developmental unfolding of the speech, language, and social phenotypes associated with these conditions. A particular emphasis is placed on (a) hypothesized dosage effects of differing numbers of X and Y chromosomes on these phenotypes, and (b) the importance of examining both speech/language and social development in concert, given the close and bidirectional relations between these domains of functioning in typical and atypical development.
