Acute Care Surgery in Geriatric Patients, pp 59-65

Abstract
Sarcopenia, broadly defined as reduction in both muscle mass and function, is a syndrome that results in a decline in functional status over time. Often affecting geriatric patients, with increasing prevalence in the aging population, it provides an easily recognizable and often modifiable target for preoperative, postoperative, and critical care patient optimization. A variety of radiologic and functional-based modalities exist to help the clinician evaluate patients for sarcopenia with little extra investigation or effort. This chapter will discuss the importance of sarcopenia in the geriatric population, its effect on trauma, acute care surgery, and critical care patients, as well as provide descriptions of multiple diagnostic modalities which are readily available to the clinician.
