Abstract
This chapter outlines the scope and historical progression of environmental justice issues and grassroots activism in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Statistical (MSA) area from 1981 to 2001. This area encompasses not just the city of Philadelphia but also the surrounding Pennsylvania counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties) and the New Jersey counties across the Delaware River from Philadelphia (Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem counties). Environmental justice activists address poor environmental and environmental health conditions facing any community that bears a disproportionate share of pollution from industrialization or technology or that is deprived of its fair share of clean and healthy
