Selecting, recruiting, and retaining study participants
Handbook of Intervention Science: From Design to Implementation, pp 425-447

Abstract
Central to any intervention study is the recruitment and retention of study participants. Recruiting and retaining study participants are critical elements of any study design for any type of intervention and at any stage of its development. As behavioral intervention research involves the prospective engagement of real people, strategies used to recruit and retain participants are critical to this endeavor. The quality of evidence and the generalizability of study findings may be seriously impaired by challenges with participant recruitment, such as insufficient or unrepresentative samples, hidden biases in outreach efforts, or high participant attrition. This chapter provides a detailed, focused discussion of the importance of and considerations in recruitment and retention activities across the lifecycle of an intervention.
