Book chapter
Sexual Offending Risk Evaluation
Forensic Mental Health Assessment
01 Jul 2014
Abstract
This chapter concerns the evaluation of sexual offenders, particularly for the purpose of legal decision-making that incorporates risk assessment. Laws in some states and the federal jurisdiction permit the government to impose additional post-release conditions for individuals classified as "sexually violent predators" (also referred to as "sexually dangerous persons"), including stricter reporting requirements and even involuntary commitment to a secure facility. The principle applied to this case involves providing appropriate notification of purpose and obtaining appropriate authorization before beginning an evaluation, with the teaching point being used to further describe how to obtain informed consent in such evaluations.
