Abstract
This paper presents a logic-based representation for shapes and objects which allows topological reasoning, among other features. This representation is suitable to be used in current CAD systems as it can be mapped from a shape's numerical representation.
This chapter presents a logic-based representation for shapes and objects which allows topological reasoning, among other features. Current CAD systems allow designers to represent shapes and objects largely as graphic objects in drawings only, without any semantic information attached to them. Currently there is a need for CAD systems that could be able to interact with designers, give feedback, and reason at a more abstract level. In this chapter, the authors address two types of spatial relationships of interest in CAD systems: topological relationships and directional relationships. The first one deals with relations, such as overlap, touch, contains, etc, that are invariant under geometrical transformations. Those relations do not change if the set of shapes is rotated, scaled or translated. The second one deals with the relative position of shapes according to a pre&defined cardinal system. Numerical representations of shapes and objects are the traditional modes of representation in CAD systems.
