The rationale was that patients perhaps might only be able to engage in receptive experiences while the caregivers would be more likely to be physically able to create art. Despite all the challenges of recruitment, meeting participants who enrolled in the study was an enriching and transformative experience. The caregivers included parents, spouses, children, and even a neighbor. Caregivers spoke about being ‘called’ to their roles either because they were the go-to person in the family or that they were perceived as the strongest and most responsive. The generosity and kindness might have been somewhat unique to this specific population. The human connection that transcends all demographic barriers was illuminated for me through this study. In addition, we are continuing to study the role of the arts for caregivers of patients with cancer, and continuing to build an evidence base on unique contributions of art therapy for patients and caregivers facing the chronic stressors of a major illness.
