Social Isolation and Loneliness
A Comprehensive Guide to Safety and Aging, pp 205-220
2023
Abstract
The problem of loneliness and social isolation in older adults is a serious public health concern that puts them at risk for dementia and other serious medical and socio-emotional conditions. This chapter describes risk factors and health consequences for social isolation; methods to screen for and assess these conditions; and strategies and resources to reduce the risk of social isolation, increase resilience, and enhance life satisfaction. Older adults, caregivers, and health professionals can all be proactive in taking steps to identify and reduce social isolation and feelings of loneliness. Awareness and early intervention are essential to help older adults feel connected to friends, family, and members in their community, increase opportunities for social participation, and feel more satisfied in older adulthood.
