Study designs for intervention research

Abstract
At the heart of developing an intervention is evaluating it. There is a multitude of design possibilities for evaluating an intervention at each stage of its development. This chapter provides an overview of the importance of, and strategies for, standardizing intervention studies through the specification of design elements, key research or study designs available to intervention scientists, and considerations for their selection. Whereas there are many classic texts devoted to types of designs, our goal is to provide an orientation or broad overview of the concept of standardization and to highlight some of the most deployed design approaches to advance an intervention at different stages of its development.
