Abstract
This chapter discusses substance use, abuse, and dependence, and reviews the circumstances under whichevidence of acute intoxication may serve to reduce legal culpability,and it describes an approach to critically evaluating anintoxication defense that considers the characteristics of thesubstance, of the defendant, and of the offense. It addresses some of the issues that are commonlyconfronted when conducting substance abuse assessmentsin forensic contexts and reviews the research literatureon the efficacy of substance abuse treatment interventions.
