Abstract
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are adverse events that present unique challenges in patient recovery and significantly increase healthcare expenditures. Post-surgical infections in pediatric orthopedic surgery are preventable events that require the implementation of appropriate methodologies and clinical practices in order to improve patient outcomes. The aim of this chapter is to provide insight on the bacterial etiologies of such SSIs, pertinent diagnostic imaging and laboratory studies used in infection detection, and applicable treatment strategies for patients with non-spinal pediatric orthopedic-related SSIs. Guidance regarding our own institutional practices in patient surgical optimization goals and postoperative complication treatment approaches provides further understanding in the overall reduction of SSIs in non-spinal pediatric orthopedic surgery.
