TEACHING THE COMMUNICATION OF EMPATHY IN PATIENT-CENTERED MEDICINE
Innovation and Leadership in English Language Teaching, pp 43-72
01 Jan 2011
Abstract
Empathy is a recurring theme in teaching clinical communication within the profession of general practice. Drawing upon analysis of the discourse of a challenging primary care consultation, this chapter describes how clinically effective empathy is interactionally accomplished. In light of this analysis, particular challenges facing some IMGs in communicating empathy are discussed. A pedagogical approach is suggested that makes use of authentic discourse data as a means to enhance the ability of doctors to communicate empathy in their interactions with patients.
