TURN ON, TUNE IN: LANGUAGE OF WAR IN IRAQ (CHILE, MEXICO, AND SPAIN)

Leading to the 2003 Iraq War, pp 249-264
01 Jan 2006

Abstract

American Imperialism Foreign Relation News Medium North American Free Trade Agreement Security Council
This chapter does not aim to put on trial either the media or the countries that opposed or supported the war. It rather presents evidence of the images of war in Iraq that the editorials portrayed in March and April 2003, in Chile, Mexico, and Spain. This study explores quantitatively and qualitatively Spanish newspaper editorials and OpEd articles. “Op-ed articles are opinion pieces published on the page opposite to editorials.”1 A major newspaper was selected in each of these countries: El Universal in Mexico City, La Segunda in Santiago, Chile, and El País in Madrid, Spain. The selection was based on access to newspapers through Lexis-Nexis2 and ABYZ News Link.
