Abstract
This collection of essays, theEast-West Divan, is the opening book of what is to become an 100-volume library of scholarship relating to the Middle East and North Africa. Over the coming decade these works will be published in memory of Mark Linz, a lifelong publisher who brought to countless readers books that exemplified the principals expounded by Goethe in hisWestöstlicher Divan, most poignantly in the poem ‘Gingko Biloba’ – a plea for a more informed and compassionate understanding of the East.
