The Heritage of American Ethnicity in Crèvecoeur’s
A Mixed Race
29 Apr 1993
Abstract
Spurred on by the controversy over the nature of the canon, American scholars, particularly after the publication of Werner Sollors’s Beyond Ethnicity,1 have turned their attention to a reevaluation of the place and function of ethnic literature. Sollors’s work was an important corrective to the tendency to see ethnic literature as a nineteenth-and twentieth-century phenomenon; in fact, as this essay attempts to show, the mechanism of ethnic culture was set in place during the colonial period.
