The Impact of Aging on Healthy Eyes
A Comprehensive Guide to Safety and Aging, pp 387-406
2023
Abstract
Vision changes occur throughout our lifetimes with some becoming more evident as we age. These are normal aging changes in the absence of disease that everyone experiences to different degrees and at different times and can occur anywhere along the visual pathway, from the level of the eye to the brain. The anatomical and physiological changes in turn affect how we see and process visual information. Normal aging changes in our vision can affect activities of daily living that may create risks for safety and well-being. Obtaining baseline measures of a broad range of visual skills in older adults is important to identify underlying or impending ocular or systemic disease and drug toxicity in need of further evaluation, treatment or medical care. Once these are ruled out, attention can be turned to ameliorating visual concerns, improving visual function and educating the older adult in order to reduce risk, maximize safety and improve quality of life.
