The Interacting Boson Model in the Continuous Basis Representation
Contemporary Research Topics in Nuclear Physics, pp 401-433
1982
Abstract
A number of properties of the Interacting Boson Model can only be described adequately in the SU(6) coherent state basis. Two of these properties are treated in the present work: the ground state energy phase transition and the reformulation of the Hamiltonian as a second order differential operator. These two properties are strongly evocative of analogous properties of the liquid drop model of collective nuclear motions. The two models are demonstrably not equivalent (the first has a finite spectrum, the second does not). However, their properties are so strikingly similar that a comparison of their logical foundations seems to reveal which details of each theory must be modified to bring them into equivalence. The appropriate modifications are proposed.
