Abstract
In 1980 I had the opportunity to spend five weeks as the ‘art lady’ at the Hampstead Child Therapy Clinic in London. I participated in team meetings conducted by Anna Freud and would like to quote her description of the ‘Diagnostic Profile’ completed for each child in that setting:
The Diagnostic Profile . . . is intended to draw the diagnostician's concentration away from the child's pathology and to return it instead to an assessment of his developmental status and the picture of his total personality. . . . diagnostic assessment is more than a mere intellectual exercise for the clinician. It is, in fact, the only true guide to the choice of therapeutic method.
(A. Freud, in R. S. Eissler et al., 1971: 184) That experience and the need to learn more culminated in my years of teaching graduate art therapy students. It also served as a model and basis for my original work (Levick, 1983), and the development of the Levick Emotional and Cognitive Art Therapy Assessment (LECATA) in 1986.
