The Next Evolution of Museum Studies: Museum Masterclasses in Augmented and Virtual Reality
Museum Studies for a Post-Pandemic World, pp 56-64
2024
Abstract
The global scale of the Covid-19 pandemic created new challenges for the hands-on learning that usually takes place during a practicum, apprenticeship, or internship. Unsatisfied with the limitations of video lectures, the Arts Administration & Museum Leadership AAML graduate programme has embarked on a journey to create "The Next Evolution in Museum Studies"-a series of educational materials delivered through Augmented and Virtual Reality. To develop the series, faculty collaborated cross-departmentally with the Virtual Reality & Immersive Media (VRIM) programme at Drexel University. Undergraduate students enrolled in VRIM 110 completed their learning objectives by scanning real museum objects and rendering them for the planned virtual museum classroom. Graduate students and professors amassed existing research on the uses of AR/VR in higher education to create a literature review to strengthen the argument for creating the Museum Masterclass Series. The pilot episode, How do you handle objects? teaches students about object handling, spotting a restoration, and transporting objects within a museum. This chapter discusses the pros and cons of shifting to virtual instruction methods and their role in creating a more equitable and inclusive education for museum students in a post-pandemic world.
