The Paradox of Digital Media for Art Therapy
The Wiley Handbook of Art Therapy, pp 275-282
01 Jan 2026
Abstract
This chapter explores how the features of digital material norms, systems, and practices need not compromise ethical or media safety nor negate critical growing edges of the profession with informed use. Digital media and technology offer exciting possibilities for enhancing art therapy practices, including daily practical needs and tasks as therapists, students, and educators, as well as the creativity in the media that can enhance therapeutic and educational spaces. Virtual Reality or VR are digital tools and computerized immersive technology platforms that utilize three-dimensional realities with stereo-viewing goggles and hand controllers. Generative Artificial Intelligence can support divergent thinking by associating remote concepts, producing ideas, and exacting imagery or text drawn from them. Limited digital training, both as a therapeutic tool and to manage professional practice, stalls therapist digital development and blocks the potential of technology therapeutic resources in a digital age.
