The Potential of Digital Solutions for Caregivers of Individuals with Dementia
Digital Convergence, pp 301-322
2026
Abstract
Current projections indicate that the number of people with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia (ADRD) will continue to increase in the upcoming decades. Informal caregivers, such as family members, provide the bulk of support to older adults with ADRD and often do so at considerable cost to themselves. Numerous studies have documented that ADRD caregiving has deleterious impacts on caregiver health and well-being. Digital technology solutions such as mobile applications, web-based platforms, sensing systems, and wearables hold promise in terms of enhancing the ability of caregivers to provide care and in reducing caregiver burden and distress. In this chapter, we discuss the potential of digital technology to provide support for family caregivers. We provide an overview of available technology solutions, discuss the potential benefits and challenges with these solutions, factors associated with the adoption of technology, examples of emerging technology solutions, and provide recommendations for research needed in this area.
