The Road Ahead: Preparing for the Future of Art Therapy Research

Abstract
This chapter presents an overview of the current state of research in art therapy in the United States and identifies directions for the future that could help inform the preparation of art therapy researchers and deepen the impact of research both within and outside of the field. Future research in art therapy will need to integrate and innovate from methods in the medical sciences, social sciences, and humanities in creative ways that capture the uniqueness of our field. Art therapy researchers will need to develop skills to manage and work with diverse interdisciplinary research teams, respond to new tools for self-expression, and learn to examine physiological and psychological changes that result from art therapy interventions. This, in turn, will raise the need to prepare art therapists who can conduct systematic inquiry using a range of mixed methods approaches.
With advancements in neuroscience, art therapists have proposed theoretical frameworks and clinical approaches that integrate existing knowledge about biological and neural systems and structures to art therapy practice. The future of art therapy research lies in the timely preparation of the next generation of researchers.
