Book chapter
The role of impulsiveness in normal and disordered eating
The impulsive client: Theory, research, and treatment
1993
Abstract
This chapter will explore impulsivity in relation to normal eating, the moderately disordered eating of chronic dieters, and the markedly abnormal eating seen in anorexia and bulimia nervosa. In the first half of the chapter, we will review the history of attempts to apply psychological concepts to eating and weight problems. We will then consider how impulsivity--and related constructs such as sensation seeking, arousability, and external responsiveness--might determine eating patterns. The effect of dieting on eating control and the possibility that impulsivity and dieting combine synergistically to contribute to disordered eating are discussed. Finally, we will review studies on the relationship between impulsivity and eating disorders. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2009 APA, all rights reserved)
