Abstract
What is it that artificial intelligence (AI) communicates? Building upon the metaphysical agenda within AI-focused human-machine communication (HMC), we present an exploration of what AI communicates by way of the reimagining of human life that AI prompts. Through narrativized consideration of the Amazon Astro situated in literature from HMC, human-computer interaction (HCI), social informatics, and postphenomenology, we take an ontological and existential approach to theorizing what AI communicates. We argue that the onto-existential effects of AI are, in fact, its primary message. Such effects necessitate a wholesale reimagination of historical ontologies and provide an optimistic opportunity to centralize concepts of “the human” rather than “the user” in our AI-driven futures. We provide interdisciplinary foundations for such centralization.
