Toward the Employ of Futuristics
Robust Unionism
15 May 2019
Abstract
AFL founder Samuel Gompers liked to recall how as a young worker in a cigar factory he profited from listening to a co-worker hired by the work force to read aloud. Although the readings varied, requests were generally for political analysts and reformers, including Ferdinand Lasalle and Karl Marx. The cigar makers were not at all averse to heated arguments about broad strategies for changing society, and, through these discussions, Gompers and his co-workers discovered that “they too possessed the ability to contrast current reality with a just and humane potential.”¹
