Transcribing and coding
01 Jan 2022
Abstract
Transcribing and coding go hand in hand. In the research cycle, they work well in tandem with each other, as opposed to being delayed, far apart from each other, or being broken into tasks by different researchers. This chapter walks researchers through the process of transcribing and coding. It first describes the six best practices for producing a clear transcription of interviews and focus groups that suits the research design and type of study participants. Next, the chapter details the six best practices for coding transcriptions. Learning these best practices will help prevent researcher burnout and fatigue, demystify the process, and provide strategies for enhancing the validity and reliability of our data. The chapter lays out the processes of transcription, including organizing and formatting transcriptions with notations, as well as suggestions for writing memos. It discusses coding methods, coding books, and triangulating coding across team members. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: create)
