Abstract
The current status of the science of trauma in bariatric patients has many gaps. There are increasing numbers of research studies conducted linking obesity to unique injury patterns and increased morbidity and mortality. More than two-thirds of the adult population in the United States is either overweight or obese. Considering this statistic, all trauma nurses should understand the specialized care needs associated with caring for the patient with obesity. With trauma being the fourth leading cause of death across all age groups, nurses will frequently care for critically ill bariatric trauma patients. Therefore, it is essential that all nurses recognize the challenges and risks associated with this vulnerable population to ensure optimal outcomes.
