Abstract
Trust is a key component of social life. Any social relationship, whether interpersonal or inter-organization, is built on trust. The processes that product trust and relationships in human interactions are vital factors determining individual and institutional performance (Requena, 2003), and are considered essential elements of the success of teams and alliances (Aryee, Budhwar, & Chen, 2002; Tzafrir, 2005; Whitener, Brodt, Korsgaard, & Werner, 1998). In the past four decades, cognitive psychologists have dominated the discussion and research associated with trust. While the definition of trust varies, cognitive psychologists have focused on the individual's pre-dispositions, beliefs and intentions of trusting others. In this chapter, we emphasize the behaviorist approach to trust that focuses on the enactment of trust. Based on this approach (Zaheer, McEvily, & Perrone, 1998), we define trust as an individual's action that increases his or her investment of resources in another party based on exceptions of reciprocity resulting from past interactions. The enactment of trust through collaboration is particularly critical for innovative technological research where individuals and alliance partners are expected to share their tacit knowledge and source of expert power with others (Ibarra, 1993, 2000). This process of knowledge sharing is also critical in understanding organizational learning and change (Argote, 1999; Argyris & Schon, 1978; Bandura, 1977; March 1991; Zaheer et al., 1998), and plays a significant role in a firm's ability to attain and retain a competitive advantage (Barney & Hansen, 1994; Kogut & Zander, 1992).
