Urban Cultural Policy and the Creative Economy
The CQ Press Guide to Urban Politics and Policy in the United States, pp 391-400
2016
Abstract
A city’s arts and culture form the core of its identity. From the performing arts to the visual, from innovative new design and architecture to the historic preservation and reuse of landmark buildings and neighborhoods, a city’s cultural assets provide tangible and enduring elements of its identity and character. They also illuminate the history and heritage of its residents. Think of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, or the Taj Mahal in Agra. All serve as distinct cultural icons rendering the cities in which they are located instantly recognizable to others.
