Visual and Ocular Disorders in Children With Disabilities

Abstract
The number of children with visual impairments who receive services from early intervention and educational programs within the United States has increased significantly during the past 50 years. Included in this population are children with physical and developmental disabilities who have associated visual and ocular disorders. Common visual deficits as well as ocular and neuro visual disorders associated with pediatric syndromes, developmental disabilities, and genetic disorders are discussed. A large majority of children with visual impairment have residual vision that could be useful for academic and rehabilitation programs. In order to ensure that these programs are sufficiently individualized, members of the interdisciplinary team providing services to these children should be aware of diagnosed ocular and visual disorders and their functional implications for the achievement of academic and developmental goals. Findings from a clinical vision evaluation help to explain observed behaviors such as postural deviations, movement-related problems, as well as lapses in visual attention. Information may also be used to optimize environmental modifications, determine appropriate characteristics of visual targets that are presented to children during therapeutic and educational activities, and individualize visual activities to enhance their responsiveness and progress. Cases are presented that highlight the functional effects of a range of visual disorders on children's orientation and mobility, activities of daily living, educational progress, and psychosocial well-being.
