Why Andrew Sayer Matters
Ethics, Economy and Social Science
2022
Abstract
This chapter considers the contributions and significance of Andrew Sayer's work both in the context of the development of critical realism and of the work of sociologists. It offers a sympathetic critique of Sayer's treatment of the rationality of the emotions, in Why Things Matter to People, and in particular its embodied, naturalistic, sociological account of our ethical nature and grounding of human rights on the basis of human need.
