Wind Instrument Technique, Function, and Evaluation: An Overview
Dentofacial Anomalies, pp 49-69
01 May 2021
Abstract
Research relevant to the interactions of the vocal tract and wind instruments has been limited with varied foci. However, a relationship among dentofacial anomalies and various wind instruments, and the effects of each area upon the other, exists. However, published materials for medical practitioners and musicians that clearly connect the relevance of scientific research in voice and dentofacial structures with traditional pedagogical practice and ideology in wind instrument instruction have not existed until now. The revelation that the entire vocal tract can suffer damage or discomfort due to wind instrument performance has gained more focus as a central topic of investigation, as opposed to an anecdotal observation, over approximately the past 70 years. Yet, very few of the findings have been shared with musicians, music teachers, and instrumentalists. This chapter focuses on connecting the scientific findings in medicine and dentistry with the traditional applications and practices of playing, teaching, and working with wind instrumentalists from the musician’s perspective.
