Abstract

Gender disparities Medical school Medical students Pediatrics Resident Trainees Women
More and more, women are choosing medicine as a career. In 2019, more than 50.5% of students were women, a landmark that has never been reached before (Boyle P. More women than men are enrolled in medical school. AAMC. 2019, December 10. https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/more-women-men-are-enrolled-medical-school). Although promising, there are several factors that may impact the success of women medical students entering pediatrics such as gender-based linguistic differences in letters of recommendation and written narratives, gender inequities in the clinical learning environment, psychological stressors, differences in research outcomes, and the double role of caring for family while forging a career. Almost two-thirds of all pediatricians are women. In this chapter, we will explore the impacts of those experiences on women entering medical school and pediatric residency training.
