Work-Life Balance for the Health Professions Educator

Abstract

Health professions faculty often lack insight into their internal states because they are trained to focus on their patients and students. Colleagues who are often astute diagnosticians may not see the early signs of burnout in themselves because they are immersed in the same day-to-day stresses and deadlines. Many of the interactions in meetings or casual hallway conversations do not activate a diagnostic mind-set. The purpose of this chapter is to help health professions faculty recognize burnout at the earliest stages so that they can intervene early. It provides an exemplar to enhance faculty members’ ability to recognize and effectively manage burnout. The chapter provides a frame-work by which health professions faculty can analyze these situations, restore a balance in the fit between health professions faculty members and their jobs, and prevent the devastating effects of burnout. It also provides strategies for achieving work–life balance and avoiding burnout.
