Master Mariner
Joseph Conrad Today, Vol.33(1)
01 Oct 2008
Abstract
Alan and Peter Villiers bring to their subject a practical knowledge of tall-ship sailing far beyond that of academic Conradians, an unmatched ability to read primary nautical source material (surviving ship's logs and manifests) and to place that evidence in the context of standard British and continental merchant marine practice of the period. The result is a fascinating book which, while not providing startling revelations, conveniently packages a large amount of detail about Conrad's sailing ' career, and offers a_good many very interesting insights. [...]he would have been a functioning crewman from the very beginning, and he would have had a good opportunity to increase his understanding of nautical English.
