Abstract
As orientation and mobility specialists, our overall goal includes teaching students to move safely, efficiently, and as independently as possible. Ideally, concepts and skills learned in mobility lessons become a part of everyday life and are transferred to a variety of settings. However, that is not always the case. Often, students do not apply at home the mobility skills they learned at school, and the skills tend to deteriorate (for example, during long school breaks) if they are not consistently used. We believe that an effective strategy to address this problem is to reach out to families to encourage parental involvement in reinforcing orientation and mobility (O&M ) skills.
