The Scholarly Vocation and the Baptist Academy: Essays on the Future of Baptist Higher Education
Fides et Historia, Vol.41(2)
01 Jul 2009
Abstract
By identifying liberal democracy as the bearer of values which are antithetical to the Christian account of reality, the authors of this volume have identified a starting place for a conversation about the future of the Christian academy. Fiddes, a Baptist theologian at Oxford University, suggests that the Christian church is actually not an alternative political community, rightly pointing out that "Christian communities have not generally tried to replace the whole range of social functions - economic, familial, political - with their own" (13). While Gushee, like Fiddes, sees no reason to be as dismissive toward contemporary culture (as many of the authors of this volume seem to be), he sees in it the first stirrings of a new form of Baptist intellectual life, native to the South, which will provide a new guiding vision for many of the Baptist colleges and universities in the region.
