Benchmarking the research impact of Drexel University through analysis of citations in the scholarly literature 1994-2004
27 Apr 2005
Abstract
This poster shows how Drexel University compares with a select group of benchmark universities using the metric of average citations per published academic paper. The rate of citations is compared in a bar chart format to reveal Drexel's overall impact on those six disciplines where Drexel-affiliated publications met a threshold level of citations, (which is different for each discipline.) We consider the ratio of citations per paper to be the most balanced metric with which to compare the research impact of publishing between universities. This is because it expresses as an index how useful the publications have been to broader research community in leading to new publications. Citations are equivalent to scholars "voting with their feet" as to the importance of a paper in a discipline that is experiencing growth. As a ratio (of all citations to all publications affiliated with a university) this metric is not affected by the difference in size between universities as would – for example - comparing the total number of publications between small and large universities (that would rank larger universities as more productive). Data Source: The citation data for this poster comes from the Thomson-ISI database "Essential Science Indicators" (ESI) covering articles published in scholarly journals during the period of 1994-2004. The ESI database also established a threshold for determining which disciplines Drexel-affiliated publishing had impacted enough to warrant the University's inclusion. In total, Drexel was ranked in six of the twenty-two disciplines tracked by the ESI database. Conclusions: Drexel compares favorably to its benchmark institutions, and in all cases performs above the average for the disciplines in which it ranked above the minimum publication threshold. Handouts: The poster is accompanied by six handouts, one for each discipline depicted in the poster. On page one of the handout for each discipline is a simplified version of the inter-university benchmarking bar chart, followed by a page two that shows the highest cited Drexel authors in that particular discipline.
