PISTool -- a personalized indexing and searching tool
06 Sep 2005
Abstract
This is an ongoing project. We are designing and implementing a personalized indexing and searching tool (PISTool) for individuals to keep track of what they read online. The tool will "index and search as you go". On any web browser, users need simply push a button (or copy and paste) to capture and save the url of the article they read, and the article will be automatically indexed on the fly by PISTool. In this way, searchable personal collections related to individual's interest will be built automatically. Our work focuses on two areas. One is to customize the open source search engine package, Lucene, for this project. The other area is to design a customized Web interface to facilitate the personalized searching and indexing. We have found many advantages of PISTool. The most important one is that PISTool allows users to gather information while they are browsing online. User's personal collections will grow as their interests grow. Users do not need to remember files' names and directories; they do not need to keep tracking of bookmarks or others in order to go back to the web pages they viewed before. They simply browse, capture, and done (ready to search), knowing that their own personal searchable libraries will be automatically developed.
