Abstract
The paper describes a method for the determination of bronchopulmonary segments based on HRCT data. This allows the calculation of segment-dependent functional CT parameters such as mean lung density or emphysema index. Also the localization of lung tumors can be improved.
After a preprocessing step (sigma filtering) the bronchial tree is segmented based on a region growing algorithm. The segmentation result is automatically divided into the segment subtrees. The bronchopulmonary segments are approximated with an algorithm based on an expansion model. The method was applied in-vivo to two helical CT datasets and validated with in-vitro preparations of the human lung.
The described method allowed a segmentation of the branchial tree up to the segment level. The validation study showed that the segment approximation accuracy is about 70 %. Therefore, the segment-dependent determination of pulmonary function parameters in lung CT is expected to have a similar accuracy. In order to exclude the infiltration of adjacent segments by a lung tumor, this accuracy needs to be improved e.g. by incorporation of additional knowledge or new imaging modalities libe multi-slice CT.
